|The Sky's Not Her Limit|
"Dr. Roberta Bondar"
Roberta Bondar's high school guidance counsellor in Sault Ste. Marie, told her to forget about science; she just didn't have what it takes. Many graduations later, Dr. Roberta Bondar is in intense training as Canada's first female astronaut. She is not only a distinguished and superlative scientist, but also a neurologist, pathologist and accomplished pilot.
Dr. Bondar was on the staff of McMaster University's Medical Centre in Hamilton when she flirted with curiosity by answering an intriguing ad for a job with the space program. She was one of some forty-three hundred applicants. Countless screenings, interviews and medical tests narrowed the list. Dr. Roberta Bondar was eventually chosen as one of the six members of the
Canadian astronaut program. She is currently training at the Canadian Space Agency in Ottawa, with frequent briefings at NASA's famed Mission Control in Houston.
Dr. Roberta Bondar has proved that the sky's the limit when it comes to Canadian achievement. She has also proved her high school guidance counsellor to be dead wrong about her scientific ability. I wonder what Roberta would be doing today if she had taken the counsellor's advice. She's another Canadian Achiever.
