|He's Bursting with Talent, Energy and Enthusiasm|
As a teenager growing up in Vancouver during the 50's, Red Robinson had only one desire. He wanted to become a radio announcer, nothing else. He hung around radio stations begging station managers to give him a try. It worked... he finally convinced one to ... "Give the Kid a Break." He was
16. Listeners like his fresh energy and honest enthusiasm and he quickly caught on and became known as "the Technicolor Host on the Coast’.
Within 5 years, and still only 21, Red was working for the top radio station in Portland, Oregon. But he missed Canada and his friends so he re
turned to Canada, married Carole whom he met on a blind date, and continued his radio career in Canada.
In 1974, he and a buddy, Steve Vrlak, opened a small advertising agency. It grew to become one of the largest advertising agencies on the west coast, with a staff of 52 doing $27 million per year.
While all of this was happening, Red kept his daily morning show on radio, m-c-ing most major events in Vancouver, and hosting the annual Timmy's Telethon, consistently the most successful telethon in Canada. Seven day, 90 hour weeks were no stranger.
Then, in 1988 Red surprised everyone by selling his shares in the agency and announcing his retirement. Those of us who knew him knew it wouldn't last. Sure enough, within two weeks, Red was back in business full speed ahead.
Since 1985 it has been my great pleasure to produce over 700 episodes of various national network radio shows with Red as host. I can tell you first hand that few people bring more to the table in talent, energy, enthusiasm and honesty than Red Robinson ...
Just as this book was going to press Red was appointed by the provincial government "Mr. Music 91". He's the ambassador for "Music 91" a major tourism initiative celebrating a year of Canadian and International music. As ambassador, he must travel extensively throughout B.C. acting as M.C. and talent co-ordinator for several hundred live music events featuring such headliners as k.d. Lang. Andre Phillipe-Gagnon, Rita MacNeil. Semi retired eh!!
