|She Got Into Tourism By Mistake|
Shirley Letto got into tourism by mistake and is now one of Newfoundland's hottest travel promoters. She wants to see how far she can go promoting tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador.
24 years ago she quietly rented out a few rooms in her Labrador home to fellow teachers. Tourists heard about the rooms and the next thing she
knew, she and her husband were running a 29-room hotel with sport-fishing on the side. They now also have a summer resort in Newfoundland.
Since then, she helped set up Northern Travels, an association to promote travel in Newfoundland and Labrador (now known as the Viking Trail Tourism Association). As marketing director of the seventeen-member group, Shirley cooks up everything from bus tours to the five year marketing plan which now targets the Maritimes, the Toronto area, the eastern seaboard of the U.S., and European markets.
Though she's never been involved or trained in marketing and promotions, Shirley finds she loves the work and not only that, she's doing very well. Tourist visits to historic sites in the province are way up and the association is winning awards.
Shirley Letto was open to changing needs around her and found a way to organize and motivate others for everyone's good. She's another Canadian Achiever.
